These devices were first announced back at Nokia World, company’s annual event for customers, partners and developers. I was one of those few lucky ones who was at the event. Got to try these phones immediately after it was launched. Was left impressed. Lumia 800 stole the show. Nokia today announces their most iconic and highly anticipated Windows Phone devices, the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710 for the Indian consumers. Shows their commitment in bringing high end smartphones to the country!

Windows Phone OS has got it’s much need attention after Nokia – MS deal which was signed back in Feb 11. Now, there are around 35k apps at Windows Phone Market place, 750 locally relevant apps created by over 500 Indian developers.

Nokia has huge plans for this device and future coming Windows Phones. They have gone ahead and opened, will be opening 5000 retail outlets with a specialized field sales force to bring alive the Nokia Lumia experience.

Lumia smartphone will be made available in select retail stores across key cities and towns in mid-December. This announcement follows close on the heels of the global unveiling of the devices last month at Nokia World, the . Both devices will be available for pre-order starting early December.

Speaking at the launch, D Shivakumar, Managing Director, Nokia India, said,

 “Our announcement today demonstrates remarkable progress that we have made as a company against our new strategy announced in February 2011. It signals our intent and agility. It also reflects our commitment to the Indian consumers in bringing to them our latest in smartphones. Over the past few months, we have been gearing up the ecosystem for the Nokia Lumia family in India and today we have in place strong operator partnerships, an all-new retail look and a ready developer ecosystem delivering rich content to make the Nokia Lumia experience a truly amazing one for Indian consumers.

“Consumer research shows that Nokia Lumia offers the only truly differentiated experience in smartphones and we are enhancing that with signature Nokia capabilities. The Lumia family, on the back of strong Symbian enhancements in Belle, positions us strongly to consolidate our lead in the Indian smartphone market,” he further added.

Also present at the launch, Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft India, said,

“We are very excited about the unveiling of the first Windows Phone based Nokia Lumia smartphones in India. They further strengthen the Windows Phone promise of making smartphones more people centric. The Nokia Lumia devices are a powerful combination of Microsoft and Nokia’s core assets and deliver new experiences through the integration of service assets across location, search, entertainment, social, advertising and commerce.”

Some distinct features of Nokia Lumia smartphones are design & construction, Carl Ziess optics, Nokia Maps & Drive with lifetime turn by turn voice guided navigation in 50 languages including Hindi and dedicated in-car-user-interface. Maps for 100 countries and 750 cities in India, Nokia Music : Mix Radio – a free, global, mobile music-streaming application that delivers hundreds of channels of locally-relevant music. These services will be available in India in the first half of 2012.

Lumia 800 & 710 also comes preloaded with Contacts Transfer, a first-of-its kind which allows phonebook transfer from any other device/platform and App Highlights, which showcases top apps and is integrated seamlessly with the online Windows Phone Marketplace.

Itseems, Nokia has been working on an extensive developer engagement and outreach programs in collaboration with Microsoft, covering over 1000 developers in India. Also, Windows Phone Marketplace will have 750 rich, locally relevant apps created by Indian partners when the Nokia Lumia hits the shelves in India. In addition, users will also have access to over 35000 apps from Microsoft, both paid and free to download, on the Windows Marketplace. Very nice initiative, that.


Nokia also unveiled a complete, made over look for its retail network. More than 5000 of its top retail outlets selling the Nokia Lumia range across the country will sport a stunning new identity. The rebranding elements include a strong visual experience including 3D and 2D in-store branding and a live device environment across all stores. A specialist field sales force at these outlets will deliver an unparalleled experience to consumers on live devices place at every retail outlet selling the Nokia Lumia smartphones – the largest ever to be deployed for any Nokia launch campaign. In addition, Nokia CARE Experience Centers (NCEC) have also been refreshed to offer the Lumia experience to consumers.

Prices were not revealed. But expected price of Nokia Lumia 800 (25k-30k) & Lumia 710 (Approx 20k) INR.
