First impressions, that. A mini me version of Nokia N9!

Nokia weeks ago, launched the newest, and the swipe’ist version of its Asha series with the launch of the Nokia 501. A brand new Asha platform. Roots revisited, this. The UI has the likes of Meego running N9. Priced at $99, around 6000Rs, it is a stunner! More details follows below.

The way phone is designed itself is impressive. The device comes with a duo-body design, meaning the phone has just 2 parts. A pretty neatly crafted toy it is.

On the software, Nokia has introduced a new look – 2 homescreens: one is a ‘Fastlane’ which is the default homescreen and the other is the traditional screen which lists all apps. ‘Fastlane’, according to Nokia is the screen which shows you the ‘present’, ‘past’ and ‘future’. Fancy terms but what it means is that the new ‘Fastlane’ is more like a notification panel where you can see all the present happenings via widgets, past notifications on scrolling down and as for the ‘future’? The Nokia Asha is synced with Facebook letting upcoming events, birthdays and reminders as part of the ‘future’. The Fastlane brings multi-tasking to Nokia Asha 501, perhaps a first for a transition device with basic specifications.

The company has formed a special alliance with Facebook and Airtel to provide free bundled Facebook access to Asha 501 users. Nokia has tied with 60 operators in 90 plus countries to provide this service. The device will be available in the Indian market by next month.

“This bundle is a great way to discover Facebook on your Nokia Asha 501 and enjoy the experience for longer without worrying about data charges. Working in close partnership with Nokia and global operators made this offer possible and we are excited to help millions of more people to connect on Facebook,” said Vaughn Smith, vice-president, mobile partnerships, Facebook.

While announcing the latest devices, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop said that India is the most important market for Nokia and the latest device is specifically designed to address the needs of Indian consumers.

“A lot of Nokia’s work is focused around the Indian market,” Elop said.

“Asha series is widely accepted by the Indian consumers. The Asha 510 will allow Nokia to deliver more value to the customers. We are confident that our devices and innovations will hit the right spot,” said P Balaji, Managing Director, Nokia India.
