Nokia announced that it is streamlining its development environments across device platforms, and focusing solely on Qt as a robust, tried and tested framework that unlocks the hardware, software and service capabilities of the existing Nokia smartphone range as well as creating huge opportunities for future Symbian and MeeGo products.

Note : Qt is the future. And older Symbian apps are not dead. They can be ported to Qt (Also many S^1 apps work just fine on S^3 phones).

Nokia Said

“We’re making strategic technology decisions that will accelerate our ability to offer the strongest possible opportunity for developers and the richest possible experience for consumers,” said Rich Green, CTO of Nokia. “For developers, it will open up a huge installed base of customers for their apps … We firmly believe that the choices we have made will not only mean significant opportunity and success for our developer partners, but for Nokia as well.”

So, as a developer, if you create your application in Qt, you will be able to easily deploy it to Nokia devices on both Symbian and MeeGo platforms. Nokia will create its own apps and UI based on Qt. Also Nokia announced its intent to support HTML5 for development of Web content and applications for both Symbian and MeeGo platforms. This will ensure continuity throughout the evolution of Symbian, enable applications to work on both Symbian and future MeeGo devices, and at the same time, provide developers with a simplified means of developing on the Nokia platform.

  • Evolution Model is the way it works! Upgrade after Upgrade.
  • Future improvements in Symbian will be developed in Qt and will be compatible with the existing Symbian^3 platform.
  • Nokia will no longer refer to Symbian^3 or Symbian^4.
  • So its all about how the end users get benefited outta this. And not only them. The developers can concentrate more on Qt which’ll help them to sell their apps for the both Symbian and MeeGo users worldwide.
  • Clean and Clear.

So for all the Symbian buddies and haters asking whether “If Future Symbian updates reach the users”.  YES IT WILL.

PS : All these UI updates applies to phones that are shipped with S^3 ie N8, C7, E7, C6-01. And not applicable for the older ones. Anyways the Qt Apps can be run on older Symbian^1 phones too, but Symbian^4 UI won’t be available for those. Hope am clearly Confusing! :P
