Q: How long has the PureView been in development?
A: Five years
Q: When will the 808 PureView be available in the market?
A: The Nokia 808 PureView is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2012.
Q: What’s the maximum ISO of the 808?
A: The maximum ISO is not yet confirmed, but expect it to be impressive!
Q: Does the camera use tap to focus?
Q: Will we see this type of capabilities on WP in the future?
A: Nokia is planning on bringing PureView technologies to future products. But we haven’t commented further than that.
Q: With regards to the battery, how many shots can the 808 take on full charge?
A: Nokia hasn’t provided exact specifics on those specs, but we can say that we expect the Nokia 808 PureView to have roughly the same battery performance as the N8 when it comes to imaging capabilities
Q: What is the typical file size for a photo taken at the highest resolution?
A: It depends on the compression, but the average file size is between 10 and 15 megabytes at full resolution.
Q: What is oversampling?
A: Oversampling refers to the use of Nokia PureView imaging technologies to use information from multiple pixels in the sensor to produce one perfect pixel in the photo. This White Paper explains the technology behind PureView and oversampling.
Q: Do you think this technology will start moving even more ‘dedicated camera’ users into mobile photography?
A: Absolutely! We believe that today’s announcement and further Nokia PureView imaging products will further blur the line between happy snappers and serious photographers.
Q: Can the amount of RAM cope with the demands of the system?
A: The RAM system on the Nokia 808 PureView is extremely powerful. In video mode, for example, the image processing pipeline handles over 1 billion pixels per second!
Q: Who makes the camera sensor?
A: The optics and lenses are co-developed by Nokia and Carl Zeiss, but not the sensor.
Q: How much more light does this oversampling get you compared to 41 mpx? How do these figures compare to the N8?
A: We don’t have final figures there yet, this is an area we are still working on. Currently the difference is significant. In daylight with full wide-angle/maximum oversampling there is no visual noise in 5mp images, yet the detail is far higher than previous devices.
Q: Would the user of the Nokia 808 still be able to make full use the video and picture editing build-in software from Symbian S3?
A: Absolutely! There’s never been a better opportunity to these editing tools. We actually have some improvements to the editing software on the Nokia 808 PureView, with a simplified video editor and an enhanced still image editor. You can also crop images directly in the full screen gallery view.
Q: Was there any specific reason Pure View was launched on Symbian over WP7?
A: We’ve heard this question many times! This is a great example of how we’re still investing in Symbian by bringing innovation on top of that platform. But as we’ve said, you will see PureView technologies coming to future products as well.
Q: What is the aperture of the 808 PureView?
Q: The Pure View teaser was a video. So, is the 808 a video-centric device rather than for photography?
A: The Nokia 808 has been designed for the full video/imaging experience -(including audio!)
Q: What is the name of the GPU chip?
A: We typically don’t disclose who our suppliers are of various components. What we can say though is that Nokia was one of the co-developers of the companion chip
Q: Will this chip be used by any other manufacturers, or did you guys develop it exclusively with your supplier for the 808?
A: The sensor was co-developed by Nokia, it’s exclusive to Nokia. Definitely not an off the shelf component!
Q: Is it possible to get RAW pictures with the 808 PureView?
A: No raw support, but it is possible to capture the full resolution images which correspond to the aspect ratio in use. You can also select a higher quality JPEG setting.
Q: Will the 808 have manual exposure controls and auto exposure lock at half-press?
Q: Many have lamented the lack of lens protection (ala N82, N95, N900), etc. Are the days of a lens cover gone as a design element?
A: We actually announced a hard cover accessory with lens cap for the Nokia 808 PureView atMWC12, for users who value this.
Q: What’s the HDMI output of the Nokia 808 PureView?
A: HDMI output is 1080p
Q: Is this technology similar to the Lytro cameras?
A: No, it’s not similar. But Lytro is another great example of how you can bring great innovation to imaging. Nokia PureView technologies are unique to Nokia.
Q: What kind of capture delay is there based on the higher image size? Also is it possible to burst capture and what is the maximum burst speed?
A: You can capture continuously by holding the capture key, there’s no dedicated burst mode. Shot to shot in full resolution is similar to N8
Q: What is the shutter lag time on the 808 PureView?
A: The shutter lag is now just 0.09 seconds.
Q: How much will the 808 PureView retail at?
A: The expected consumer price for the Nokia 808 PureView is EUR 450 before taxes and subsidies.
Q: Will HDR imagery be incorporated in the 808?
A: We have provided exposure bracketing for the first time, we believe this will provide greater flexibility for use with PC editors which specialise in HDR. The delay in full resolution mode is roughly the same as the Nokia N8. There is no dedicated burst mode, but you can do continuous shooting by holding the shutter down. We’ve also included histogram for the first time
Q: Does the exposure bracketing support 5 as well as the default 3 image cluster? Also, what is the time between capture for each image as this impacts on fuse quality?
A: 3 and 5 frames with increment control of 0.3, 0.7, 1.0 and 2.0 EV
Q: How many metering modes are there?
A: Just the one.
Q: Is there any significance in 41MP as oppose to 40MP, or 50MP?
A: 41MP is what we needed to provide optimised 16:9 and 4:3 plus the zoom range we wanted to provide.
Q: How long before we see this tech from other suppliers?
A: There were three significant challenges which we needed to overcome to create the camera in the 808 PureView:
1. Super high resolution sensor with greate low light performance
2. Incredible optics which can resolve the detail from the 41mp sensor, get this wrong and there’s not point in making it.
3. an image processign architecture that can handle over 1 billion pixels per second when recording video as well as the algorithms to retain the optimal detail captured with the high resolution sensor and optics.
Q: How powerful is the single LED is for video recording? Does the camera unit use the LED flash in stills as well?
A: The LED is extremely bright. The challenge with LEDs now for video given the light source is very small is how to increase brightness without making it very uncomfortable for the subject. The LED can also be used as a torch. For stills it’s used only as a focus assist lamp (there is a user setting now to disable that function if you prefer). Of course for stills the xenon flash is the light source. We expect it to provide at least double the flash range of the Nokia N8.
Q: Is this technology compatible with current ‘zoom’ technologies e.g. Deep Zoom?
A: If I have understood your question correctly Deep Zoom is a technology for viewing images, not capturing them.
Q: Does this phone support RAW processing or any way to get a full 41mpx photo such as on an Nseries?
A: RAW in a digital camera is easier to handle as typically images have to pass through a PC, whereas RAW on a smartphone brings a whole host of end to end experience challenges, which results in some kind of compromise in the experience somewhere. We do however provide full resolution images that correspond to the aspect ratio in use as well as a reduced compression setting.
Q: Does the video recording use the initial accelerometer sensor position (the position the phone was when the it started recording) for setting the videoclip’s orientation?
A: Videos are always recorded in landscape.
Q: What about Panorama shots? Is Panorama mode back in PureView camera app?
A: We are still investigating this…
Q: The “Pure View” teaser mentioned “Pure Depth” will this mean increased depth of field for mobile users?
A: We were actually referring to the zoom capability, but I can see how you made the connection.
Q: N8 has ‘What will you do with it?’ promo. It was great. What’s the 808?s tag line?
A: Not yet announced.
Q: If I record a video for 15 minutes, at full/max, highest definition, how many bytes will it consume?
A: In 1080p at 30fps the 808 requires approximately 150mb/minute of recorded footage
Q: Does the Nokia 808 support macro mode?
A: Yes as close as 15cm but also with full zoom unlike many optical zooms
Q: Is the size of the camera in a way set in stone, or do you expect to be able to bring the size down for future devices, or would that mean taking the maximum megapixel amount down?
A: The size of the module is largely dictated (although not exclusively) by the size of the sensor.
Q: What is the material used for body, camera lens protector unit, and does it have a removable battery and stereo speakers?
A: Polycarbonate for main body with a ceramic-like feel to it. The glass over the display is 2.5D Gorilla glass (curved at the edges). Gorilla glass is also used to protect the camera. Side buttons/switches and the camera bezel area is polished stainless steel. Battery is removable. Audio is recorded in stereo but there is a single speaker for playback in the device.
Q: What is the file size of a 41MP image, on average?
A: It depends on the selected compression level. Normal compression level max resolution images are typically 6-12mb and lower compression can be as much as 20-25mb.
Q: Is there any new technology to improve image stabilization on video mode?
A: Some improvements.
Q: Taking into account the size of the sensor and the huge amount of megapixels this means that the pixels are quite small…is this not a bad idea regarding noise in low light conditions? Also, does the 808 give any improvement in video stabilization technology and does this supports long exposures, making it suitable, for instance, for astro timelapsing?
A: Pixels are 1.4 microns. Oversampling is extremely effective in reducing/eliminating noise depending on the conditions. Re shutter speed, those specs are not yet finalised.
Q: And regarding exposure, how long it can be? Suitable for astrophotography?
A: Not yet finalised
Q: How large is the image sensor?
Q: Any indications of shot-to-shot times in the various resolutions?
A: Less than a second typically in 5mp mode and around 2-3 seconds in max resolution mode, very similar to the N8 in the case of full resolution.
Q: Is it possible to choose the image compression ratio on this device?
A: Yes, two settings
Q: What does Belle feature pack 1 actually bring and will it be available on other phones?
A: Some phones, but exact details have not yet been announced. Main improvements are new web browser, secure NFC, Dolby surround sound playback over normal headphones, updated widgets and a number of usability refinements, plus of course all new gallery and camera including integration of sharing options.
Q: Is the camera technology inside expandable? Should we expect for next year 81 or 101 Mpx, more sharpness etc?
A: Sorry, but we can’t comment on future product plans
Q: Would you call the 808 a “niche phone”? If yes, who is Nokia’s target here? In terms of customer segmentation. How does Nokia describe the “808 user”?
A: We see the appeal of capturing incredible photos and videos covering a wide range of users, hence the development of a new camera UI to provide extremely easy video and photo shooting out of the box.
Q: Does the 808 have image stabilizer for videos?
A: Yes, sw based.
Q: Is the 808 phone capable of editing .mov content?
A: There is a trimmer included for video editing, which is the most commonly used video editing capability
