2017 Volkswagen Phideon

The large luxury sedan segment is increasingly getting new
models from automakers looking to expand their revenue streams.
As the global economy expands, more and more business
executives are turning to large luxury sedans as their favorite
mode of transport especially in China.  During the recent
Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen showcased their large, luxury
sedan dubbed the “Phideon” which will be produced exclusively
for the Chinese market.  You might be surprised to learn
that the funny name is adopted from the Roman god of fidelity,
Fides. Volkswagen claims the 2017 Volkswagen Phideon sedan will
be an ‘object’ of elegance and reliability.

The vehicle will be built on the Modular Longitudinal Matrix
(MLB) platform becoming the first Volkswagen model to feature
this platform. Volkswagen joins Audi who also have an exclusive
large sedan, the Audi A6L for the Chinese market. Read along to
find more about the new Phideon.

2017 Volkswagen Phideon Exterior

As said earlier, the Phideon becomes the first VW automobile to
be based on the MLB platform which means the model will be long
and ideal for use as a limousine. The exterior profile looks
sporty. At the front, it comes with a wide grille featuring
horizontal slats.  To complement the grille is a pair of
large LED equipped headlights. The front look is based on the

C Coupe GTE concept the automaker showcased in Shanghai
Auto show last year.

On the sides, the Phideon is equally elegant. It has an
attractive character lime which starts at the front fenders and
runs above the door handles to the deck lid. The rear end
borrows its design from the new Passat as well as from the C
Coupe GTE concept. Its taillights are unique and feature a
2-tier design with four LED clusters and chrome inserts. A
wrap-around chrome strip on the lower part of the rear and
elegant stainless steel exhaust tips complete the premium look
of the Phideon.

Dimension-wise, the 4-door sedan is 5.05 meters long, 1.87
meters wide and 1.48 meters tall.

2017 Volkswagen Phideon Interior

Details about the Phideon’s interior are still scarce. However,
a press release that accompanied the vehicle’s debut revealed
that the vehicle’s cabin will accommodate five passengers
comfortably. The release also added that the vehicle aims at
appealing to both self-drivers and those who love to be
chauffeur-driven. Due to the MLB platform, the cabin offers
plenty of legroom in front and at the rear. The car is
particularly ideal for the Chinese market many owners love to
be chauffeured around.

The vehicle’s seats are luxurious and are power adjustable. The
seats are also heated and ventilated and have a massage
function. The cabin will also be luxuriously lighted to offer a
relaxed and lounge-like ambience. On the technology front, the
vehicle will be adequately equipped. It will feature a large
head-up display that also projects information to the

It will also feature the Modular Infotainment system that
integrates MirrorLink and CarPlay which helps integrate
Smartphones to enable the driver to use various apps. We will
give you more updates on the interior styling cues of the
Phideon once VW makes such information available.

Engine Specs and performance

The new 2017 Volkswagen Phideon sedan will be offered with
three engine choices. The first engine which has already been
confirmed is a 3.0 L, V-6 capable of putting up 296 hp and 322
lb-ft of torque.  This will be the most potent engine for
the sedan. It will be paired with the automaker’s 4MOTION AWD

The second engine will be a 2.0 L, turbocharged 4-cylinder
engine. This engine will produce 217 hp and 258 lb-ft of
torque. The mill will be offered in front-wheel drive.
There will also be a hybrid drive-train. However, the
exact hybrid engine that will be used is not yet known but many
enthusiasts expect Volkswagen to use the same engine as that on
the Passat GTE. The said drive-train combines a 1.4 L,
4-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 215 hp and
295 lb-ft of torque.

Price and release date

The automaker did not disclose the Phideon’s price or release
date during the launch at Geneva. However, we expect the new
sedan to be more expensive than the Passat since it slots above
it.  Most likely, it will have a price similar to the
Phaeton or slightly higher.   The model will be
released in the third quarter of 2016. As said earlier, the
model will only be sold in china so don’t expect it in the US.

Volkswagen hopes the new VW Phideon 2017 will eat
into the Audi
A6 sales. The automaker’s Passat is much smaller and
dull to compete with the Audi A6L. The Phideon will go head to
head with the long-wheelbase Audi A6L which is sold exclusively
in China. The Cadillac
CT6 and Lincoln
Continental will also rival the Phideon. However, the
Cadillac and Lincoln
Continental are offered all over the world.
